Academics
At Portage Leadership Academy, academics are designed to challenge students while developing leadership habits alongside content knowledge. Students engage in rigorous instruction that promotes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and responsibility. Our classrooms encourage curiosity, perseverance, and ownership so students are prepared for long-term academic and personal success.
Powered by AMP/edu

Our school is powered by the AMP/edu ecosystem — a unified, modern learning platform that strengthens classroom instruction and enhances every student's learning experience. AMP brings together curriculum, tools, and resources in one cohesive system, helping teachers deliver engaging, consistent instruction and giving students confidence with a well-supported, high-quality education.
English Language Arts
Students become confident readers, writers, and communicators who think independently and express ideas clearly. We focus on building strong literacy skills that support learning across every subject.
Math
Through problem-solving and real-world application, students develop mathematical reasoning, logical thinking, and perseverance. We help children build both skill and confidence as they tackle new challenges.
Science
Hands-on exploration and inquiry-based learning spark curiosity and critical thinking. Students investigate the world around them and learn how to ask questions, test ideas, and solve problems.
Physical Education
Physical Education promotes teamwork, wellness, and healthy habits. Students build strength, coordination, and sportsmanship while learning the importance of caring for their bodies and working together.
Leadership
Portage Leadership Academy integrates leadership into every academic area through:
- Small-group instruction
- Project-based learning
- Service-learning opportunities
- Student leadership roles
- Cross-curricular writing and communication
- Personalized support
- Real-world application of skills
Students don’t just learn content — they learn how to lead with it.
Instructional Model
At Portage Leadership Academy, our instructional model meets each student where they are by blending small-group collaboration with deeply individualized education plans. By combining intimate, flexible learning groups that foster peer teaching and social-emotional growth with thoughtfully crafted goals tailored to each student's unique strengths, we ensure every learner receives both the support and the challenge they need to soar. This integrated approach creates a dynamic environment where curiosity is nurtured and mastery is supported, ultimately empowering students to think independently, solve complex problems, and develop the leadership skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to their community.
Individualized Instruction
Students participate in a variety of learning activities each day that individualize instruction for each subject area. Students receive whole class instruction, small group instruction, and individual instruction with teachers, technology and other curricular tools.
Properly Certified & Licensed Teachers
Our teachers meet the educator qualification requirements outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA): Bachelor’s degree, grade-level teaching license/certificate & ability to demonstrate subject area expertise. Our teachers are supported by trainers and participate in continuous, research-based professional development. Our teachers are accountable for student learning and rewarded for high quality performance.
More Time on Task
Our students receive double the instruction in ELA and Math to provide a strong foundation for all learning. Beginning with full-day Kindergarten, our school also follows a longer school day and school year than many other schools.
Short Cycle Assessments
Student knowledge of academic standards is assessed formally and informally in short cycles by each teacher. Our teachers adjust class-level and individual instruction based on student performance in these frequent intervals.

Social Studies
Students explore history, geography, culture, and civic responsibility, developing empathy, respect, and an understanding of their role in the community and beyond.
